VOLUNTEER & COACH REQUIREMENTS
Prepared. Qualified. Ready to Serve.

BEFORE YOU STEP ON THE FIELD
Prepared to Serve. Ready to Lead.
Volunteers are the foundation of Compton Little League. Coaches, managers, umpires and other volunteers give their time and experience to create a positive environment for our players.
Before working with players, volunteers must complete the applicable Little League® registration, background screening and training requirements for their role. These safeguards help ensure that everyone serving in the program understands their responsibilities and is prepared to work safely and appropriately with young athletes.
The requirements may vary depending on the volunteer position, but the principle is simple: complete the required steps before beginning your role.
This page explains what is required, where to complete it and what volunteers should expect before taking the field.
VOLUNTEER APPLICATION
Every volunteer begins with an application.
Anyone serving in a volunteer role with regular service or repetitive access to players must complete the applicable Little League® volunteer application process before beginning that role. This includes managers, coaches and other adults whose responsibilities bring them into regular contact with players.
For Compton Little League, volunteer applications will be completed through our Sports Connect registration system. Applicants should provide complete and accurate information and follow the instructions provided during the application process.
Submitting an application does not by itself authorize someone to begin working with players. Required background screening and applicable training must also be completed before the volunteer is cleared to serve.
Volunteer applications and required clearances are season-specific. Returning volunteers must complete the applicable requirements for each new season, regardless of how recently they may have completed them during the previous season.
Apply first. Complete the requirements. Then take the field.

BACKGROUND CHECKS
Protecting Players Starts with Knowing Who Serves.
Little League® requires annual background checks for managers, coaches, board members and other volunteers or workers who provide regular service to the league or have repetitive access to players or teams. Screening must be completed before the individual begins serving for the current season.
Background checks are required for both new and returning volunteers each season. A background check completed for a previous season does not carry over to the next season, regardless of how recently it was completed. The current season's background check is required whether a volunteer applies at the beginning of the season or joins later.
Compton Little League's volunteer application and required background-screening process will be completed through our Sports Connect registration system, including the required JDP background check. Once volunteer registration is activated, applicants will be able to begin the process directly through the Compton Little League Volunteer Application.
CALIFORNIA BACKGROUND SCREENING REQUIREMENTS
In addition to Little League® International's annual JDP background check, California law requires youth-service organization administrators, employees and qualifying regular volunteers to undergo fingerprint-based background screening, commonly known as Live Scan.
Under California law, a regular volunteer is an individual age 18 or older who has direct contact with or supervises children for more than 16 hours per month or 32 hours per year.
California Live Scan screening is separate from Little League® International's annual JDP background check. Compton Little League will provide the applicable screening instructions to covered individuals and confirm that all required background checks have been completed before authorizing them to serve.

REQUIRED TRAINING
Prepared Volunteers Create a Safer League.
Every Compton Little League volunteer must complete the Little League® Abuse Awareness Training before beginning volunteer service. The course helps volunteers recognize misconduct and abuse, understand appropriate boundaries, and know how concerns should be reported.
The Abuse Awareness Training must be completed annually. Training completed on or after October 1 is valid for the upcoming Little League season. Completion certificates expire on October 1 each year, and volunteers must have valid training before beginning their duties.
Additional training may be required depending on the volunteer's role. Managers and coaches, for example, may have coaching, safety or other training requirements that go beyond those applying to all volunteers. Those requirements are addressed in the Coach & Manager Requirements section below.
CALIFORNIA CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION TRAINING
California law establishes additional child abuse prevention and reporting training requirements for youth-service organization administrators, employees and regular volunteers under Business and Professions Code §18975. For volunteers, this requirement applies to individuals age 18 or older who have direct contact with or supervise children for more than 16 hours per month or 32 hours per year.
Compton Little League will follow the applicable California requirements and Little League® International's guidance for its chartered leagues.
Volunteers should retain their completion records and provide any required documentation to Compton Little League as part of the clearance process.
All applicable training requirements must be completed before a volunteer begins serving.

COACH & MANAGER REQUIREMENTS
Leading a Team Comes with Added Responsibility.
Managers and coaches have direct responsibility for the players entrusted to their teams. In addition to completing the Compton Little League Volunteer Application, required background screening and Little League® Abuse Awareness Training, managers and coaches must be formally appointed and approved before assuming their roles.
Little League® provides coaching education and resources covering player development, practice organization, safety, rules and creating a positive environment for young athletes. Compton Little League expects managers and coaches to become familiar with the rules, responsibilities and instructional practices appropriate to the divisions in which they serve.
Managers and coaches selected for Little League International Tournament teams must also complete the Little League® Diamond Leader Training Program before participating as a tournament manager or coach. Unlike the seasonal volunteer requirements, Diamond Leader is a one-time training requirement and does not need to be repeated each season.
Appointment as a manager or coach does not automatically carry over from one season to the next. Managers and coaches must be appointed by the Compton Little League President and approved by the Board of Directors for each season before assuming responsibility for a team.
Coaching is more than knowing the game. It means being prepared to teach, lead and provide a safe, positive experience for every player.

CONDUCT & RESPONSIBILITIES
Set the Example. Respect the Game. Protect the Players.
Every Compton Little League volunteer is expected to conduct themselves in a manner that supports a safe, respectful and positive environment for players, families, officials and fellow volunteers.
Volunteers should treat players fairly, use age-appropriate instruction and maintain appropriate adult-player boundaries at all times. Harassment, bullying, intimidation, discrimination, abusive language, physical aggression or other inappropriate conduct has no place in Compton Little League.
Managers, coaches and other volunteers are also expected to respect umpires and game officials, follow Little League® rules and league policies, and model the sportsmanship they expect from players and families. Disagreements should be handled appropriately and never allowed to interfere with the safety or experience of the players.
Volunteers share responsibility for speaking up when they observe unsafe conditions, inappropriate behavior or a potential violation of player-protection requirements. Suspected child abuse or serious misconduct should be reported in accordance with Little League® requirements and applicable law.
Serving as a volunteer means accepting responsibility not only for what you do, but for the example you set.

BEFORE YOU TAKE THE FIELD
Cleared. Prepared. Ready to Serve.
Before beginning any volunteer role with Compton Little League, make sure all requirements applicable to your position have been completed. Submitting an application is only the first step.
Before serving, volunteers should confirm that they have:
-
Completed the Compton Little League Volunteer Application for the current season.
-
Completed the current season's Little League® background check and any additional screening required under California law.
-
Completed the required Little League® Abuse Awareness Training for the current season.
-
Completed any additional training required for their specific role.
-
If serving as a manager or coach, received the required appointment and approval for the current season.
-
Reviewed the applicable player-safety, child-protection and conduct requirements.
Do not assume that completing a requirement during a previous season provides clearance for the current season. Requirements that apply each season must be completed again, even when only a short period has passed since the previous season.
If you are unsure whether all requirements for your position have been completed, confirm your status with Compton Little League before participating in practices, games or other activities involving players.
Application. Screening. Training. Approval. Then you are ready to take the field.
